Steven Toms, 59, and Jan Toms, 58, were accused of setting up a fake donation spot for the veteran's charity Adopt-A-Soldier Platoon outside of Stop and Shop at Preakness Shopping Center in Wayne Jan. 25, Capt. Laurence Martin said.
The president of the real organization called Wayne police to say the couple gave false papers to look like they were with Adopt-A-Soldier Platoon when they were not, Martin said.
Video footage showed Steven and Jan Toms at the table and they were arrested Feb. 12, and each charged with tampering with public records, wrongful impersonation and theft by deception, the captain said.
Police believe the couple may have ran similar scams in spots around the area, Martin said.
They were both released from police headquarters pending future court dates, he said.
Adopt-A-Soldier Platoon, based in Fair Lawn, provides donations for wounded servicemen and women as they transition into civilian life.
